Why doesn’t God do miracles today? Why doesn’t He show His power the way He did in the Bible? These are common questions that cause many to stumble, and in my musings while raking the yard today, the Holy Spirit gave me a satisfying answer I wanted to share.
There are plenty of verses in the Bible indicating God’s immutable nature. He doesn’t change. Therefore, he can still do the amazing things witnessed by men and women in the Old Testament. But we don’t see fire called down from heaven, or thousands of people fed with a single basket of food. Is that any reason to think God’s somehow changed or doesn’t exist? Not if you read what He said about these things.
1 Corinthians 13:8-10 New Living Translation (NLT)
“8 Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages[a] and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! 9 Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! 10 But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless.”
Paul wrote this letter in the first century A.D. and seems to be speaking about a time when God start dealing with humanity differently than He is in their day. And the passage suggests God at some point plans to withdraw His large scale miraculous events from the world at large. Not to say these things can’t happen. But perhaps they’re just less likely to. Jesus himself even said something similar in Matthew 12:
…The Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority.”
39But Jesus replied, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.”
Again, this passage could indicate ‘the age of miracles’ is winding down. There’s nothing to stop God from dealing with every age of humanity differently. If He’s God and we’re His creation, He can do whatever He wants. We slip up when we try to apply what we would do to Him without really knowing Him. So, bearing in mind all that, I believe the Holy Spirit revealed an awesome truth to me about why the Lord chose to do this.
Many believe that we are living in the End Times where numerous passages state that sin will be rampant and the love of many will grow cold. We do find it increasingly hard to meet and know real christians vs. carnal ones or malicious pretenders. We face persecution on social media, in schools, and death in other countries around the world. But what amazes me is how people come to know God through these little encounters in their lives. Situations, circumstances, all brought about through prayer and reading a single book (the Bible) where lives become radically transformed so that the person living them is no longer recognizable. Compared to what He used to do, it may seem like God is barely doing anything. But even in the Old Testament, God did something similar. From the middle of a tornado, He spoke to Elijah, in a ‘still, small voice’, so I believe he could be doing the same thing now.
And all to display His awesome power. Now, at a time, when evil runs rampant through every facet of every corner of society, God has pulled back. He has all the power in the universe. He has not lost his strength. His arm has not grown tired. But because He is so marvelously, awesomely powerful, He shows us that, even with the Devil at the height of his power, God can give us victory with the Least of His Abilities. His Whispers, Suggestions, and Nudges, are more powerful than all the armies of Hell. If you submit your life to Him through Cross of Christ, you can see that His ‘still, small voice’ in the back of your mind, can be the miraculous sign you’ve been waiting for. And it’s more than powerful enough to give you a new life, and victory.
